What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a set of clear braces referred to as aligners. These aligners are essentially transparent plastic trays custom made from a digital scan of your teeth.
Each aligner is worn for a period of 7-14 days and for a minimum of 22 hours a day and each aligner gradually and gently moves your teeth towards your desired smile. Although every client’s situation differs, most of ours achieve their perfect smile within an average of 6-12 months.
There are many ups to Invisalign®, but what everyone loves most about Invisalign® is that unlike traditional braces, the Invisalign® trays are virtually invisible. And in our experience, treatment time is a lot quicker too.
As unbelievable as it may seem, Invisalign® can be just as effective as traditional braces but with advantages that make them a great option for many people. It’s no wonder that 6 million smiles worldwide have been transformed using Invisalign®.
Why Choose The Dental Room?
The technology is only as good as the operator driving the technology. And of course, you cannot go past the signature Dental Room service in a special environment that is not what you would typically expect from a medical clinic.
Is Invisalign® Right for you?
For many people, there is a lot of confusion and debate regarding Invisalign® vs braces.
Invisalign® has been around since 1997. Since its inception, the company itself has invested heavily into research and development and today, the technology has proven to be very effective in correcting mild to moderate alignment problems as well as many severe orthodontic cases as well.
Although you might think that your dental problems are severe, you might be pleasantly surprised by how achievable the results are. Your best bet is to make an appointment at The Dental Room. We’ll give you a FREE consultation to make sure it’ll work for you. We often help people with some of the following issues, to get the perfect smile!
- Crossbite: Some of the upper teeth are positioned behind the lower teeth.
- Overbites: When the top teeth go over the bottom teeth. This can be most of the teeth or just a few.
- Underbites: The opposite of an overbite, the bottom teeth jut out and go over the top teeth.
- Openbite: This is when the top and bottom teeth can’t meet.
- Overcrowding: This is when there isn’t enough space in the mouth which causes the teeth to grow askew or in the wrong places.
Tooth gaps: Excessively large gaps between teeth.
How Much Does Invisalign® Cost?
When the thought of wearing braces doesn’t turn people away, it’s often the question: “How much are braces”? The cost of Invisalign® in Melbourne is largely lesser than traditional braces.
However, since each person’s case is different, prices will vary depending on the complexity levels. At The Dental Room we pride ourselves on providing very transparent costs for treatment without any surprises and only using genuine Invisalign® products.
Here is an estimate of what you can expect to pay at The Dental Room:

Frequently Asked Questions
Most clients undergoing Invisalign® treatment at our clinic have dental crowding. In order to treat the crowding, we need to create space to move the teeth into line. This space can be achieved in many ways, including extractions, proclining teeth or interproximal reduction (slimming the tooth up to 0.5mm).
We will discuss all your options with you but almost all of the Invisalign® treatments at The Dental Room do not require extractions. By effectively planning your case, we work with you to ensure a safe, conservative and predictable long term result.
In order to get Invisalign® treatment, you will need to be seen by someone who is specially trained and endorsed to provide Invisalign® treatment. Your treatment plan will be comprehensive and customized just for you.
Both Orthodontists and some Dentists can provide you with Invisalign®. The difference between general dentists and orthodontists is that orthodontists have specialised in just orthodontics and don’t perform general dentistry work.
Some dentists also have training in orthodontics – like The Dental Room. But remember that whether you choose to see a dentist or an Invisalign® orthodontist, they need to be Invisalign®-trained. The great thing about the Dental Room is that they can provide you with Invisalign® as well as continue to look after you over the long term for your general dental needs.
What is also very important is to determine how much experience your dentist has in providing Invisalign® treatment. Having a Platinum status, you can be rest assured that our dentists have a high level of experience in providing Invisalign® treatment for a whole range of orthodontic problems.
Depending on your dental needs, there are a few different Invisalign® options:
- Express: This option is recommended for minor problems such as in the case of just one or two teeth being askew or in the wrong place. We also often use this package prior to other cosmetic work such as porcelain veneers. This option is limited to 7 aligners per arch.
- Lite: This treatment option is also for mild crowding and rotations and is limited to 14 aligners per arch.
- Moderate: This treatment option is for moderate crowding and rotations and fixing some bite issues. It allows for up to 26 aligners and unlimited refinements for 2 years.
- Comprehensive: This treatment option gives us the flexibility to treat the more complicated cases as it allows for unlimited retainers and refinements for a 5 year period.
- Teens: This treatment option is specifically for teens as their teeth constantly shift as they grow and new adult teeth keep coming in. It includes complimentary trays as well as eruption tabs which are there to prevent molars from becoming misaligned. The trays also have blue dots that fade after two weeks to help teens with compliance.
There are many considerations to take into account before starting your Invisalign® journey. The decision depends on your lifestyle and preference but most people find that Invisalign® is a great alternative to traditional braces.
Very importantly, Invisalign® requires strict compliance. The aligners need to be worn for 22 hours a day and only to be removed for eating. You leave it in when drinking (including coffee, tea and wine!). After eating, you simply rinse your mouth and put your aligners in place. Many clients even tell me that they lose weight during treatment because they cannot be bothered taking their aligners out to snack!
If compliance is going to be an issue, I would recommend traditional methods.
It goes without saying that they are more aesthetically appealing since they are “invisible braces” – transparent clear plastic trays. For adults and teens, this is ideal. Being able to speak and smile with confidence throughout the process is important.
Invisalign® Works Faster
The treatment period is shorter. Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign® works around 50% quicker with smart programming by our dentists. On average, Invisalign® takes between 12 and 18 months, but at The Dental Room, we’ve seen treatment completed in as little as 6 months.
Traditional methods require more frequent appointments as certain types of braces need to be manually tightened to keep aligning the teeth. With Invisalign®, we give you three sets of aligners at a time and on average you only see us once a month.
Better Dental Hygiene
With conventional braces, dental hygiene can be difficult to maintain because the braces get in the way and are hard to clean.
Invisalign® trays are easy to take out when you need to brush your teeth and floss. The trays themselves are easy to clean since there are no wires or any other pieces to worry about. You can just rinse them when needed and brush them with your toothbrush.
Because the trays are custom-designed for your teeth they are so much more comfortable to wear. There are no protruding pieces so your cheeks and tongue won’t get irritated and inflamed.
For most people, Invisalign® is less painful to use than traditional braces. The feeling has been described as pressure and the discomfort usually only lasts for the first two days when putting in a new tray.
They also don’t get in the way of your speaking since the aligners are a precise fit and minimal so you can chat to anyone or deliver that speech with confidence.
Eat Whatever You Like
The trays are easy to remove any time you need to eat and because you clean your teeth before putting your trays back in, you can eat whatever you want.
Treatment times are determined by many variables including the type of dental issue and its severity and the way the dentist programmes the treatment plan. Hence, it is impossible to determine treatment times without a consultation and taking a 3D digital scan of your teeth.
At our clinic, most of our clients are programmed to have their dream smile within 12 months.
Yes. Most of our clients pay a $2000 initial fee upon starting treatment and pay the remainder over the period of treatment. We are also pleased to offer 6 12 and 18-month interest-free payment plans with ZipMoney.
When you come for your complimentary consultation all the costs will be discussed upfront so that you don’t have to worry about nasty surprises down the line. Feel free to speak to us about an Invisalign® payment plan.
Invisalign® is rarely painful. Most of our clients have said there was a mild discomfort and most agree that there was very little pain. This discomfort can be felt for the first two days of each new aligner and it required, a mild analgesic such as Panadol will ease the discomfort.
Some clients have also reported scratches to their lips and gums with the first aligners. The mouth is an extremely sensitive environment and we suggest polishing the edges of the aligners with a fine emery board. Before you know it, the mouth gets used to the aligners and it quickly eels stranger not to have your aligners in!
When you come for a consultation, you will get all the information you need to make a decision. We will be able to determine how to straighten your teeth in a way that is right for you.
It really comes down to which options are suitable for your dental problem, the cost, and the pros and cons of each method of treatment.
If Invisalign® isn’t for you, there are other options:
Traditional braces are very visible, but as they are a fixed type of treatment the compliance rate is much better. They can treat many dental problems from mild to severe alignment issues.
They can make it hard to clean your teeth and it’s a little harder to clean the braces themselves. Because of their design, they can also cause some irritation in the mouth.
Compared to traditional braces, ceramic braces are a little less obvious, but still more visible than Invisalign®. Other than that they have the same advantages and disadvantages as the metal braces.
If you want an invisible option, lingual braces can be used. They are attached to the back of your teeth and are effective for treating many of the same problems as traditional or ceramic braces.
They can be more difficult for you and your dentist to handle compared to the other treatment options as they are positioned so far back. They can also impair your speech a little bit.
